In the 1700s, products were created by individual craftsmen practicing their trades. If you wanted horseshoes for your horse, for instance, you contacted your local blacksmith and he created them for you. If you wanted barrels to store water, you contacted your local cooper.

The industrial revolution changed all that. Advances in power generation, first with steam power and later with electricity, aided with the mechanics of gears, belts, and pulleys, provided large quantities of cheap energy. Rather than craftsmen making products, men crafted machines which then made products. Machines such as railroad locomotives, rather than draft horses, then carried those products to market. Oliver Winchester developed the idea of standardized, interchangeable parts. Henry Ford constructed large factories using an operational model based on the idea of an assembly line.

The world was forever changed. These advances ushered in the 20th century, with its large quantity of low-cost, high-quality goods.
