Cloud IT Transformation Enables IT as a Service (ITaaS)
Cloud IT Transformation is the process by which IT evolves existing inefficient and manual operating models to the automated, self-service model that cloud computing enables. An organization’s path along the journey may be ordered differently, but the steps taken are remarkably similar. Take a look at the diagram below which charts a typical path:

Beyond Virtualization
Most enterprises are well into their virtualization initiatives by now and many have virtualized over 60% of their physical servers and reaped the cost savings associated with server consolidation. But, as large enterprises encounter new global market entrants and smaller, more nimble competitors, business units must get new applications and services to market much faster to compete effectively. Existing IT operating models, that rely on manual approvals and actions (even if they are “automated” with a workflow tool) can’t keep pace with this speed of change and virtualization alone doesn’t help. To rein in Shadow IT (where business units and developers use external cloud providers for IT resources with no governance controls) and enable the business to compete effectively, many enterprise IT organizations are beginning the Cloud IT Transformation journey to move to the on-demand, self-service model offered by external cloud providers.
Private Cloud Initiatives Often Stall, But Why?
Currently, private clouds initiatives are prevalent in enterprise IT organizations, as they seek to empower their business units to quickly address market opportunities. But without enterprise grade cloud management these initiatives often stall before they reach value. IT Governance and security must be preserved throughout the lifecycle of cloud applications and cloud services in order to safely allow business users to access and automatically deploy them on demand. Without enterprise grade cloud management, it is nearly impossible to extend initial private cloud deployments to hybrid cloud and to the goal of “everything as a service IT”.
