ServiceMesh DevOps Capabilities Shine at Hackathon

Last week ServiceMesh had the opportunity to join one of our leading customers at their hackathon.  This multi-national organization hosts these events with the goal of building solutions to address specific problem statements and to help foster innovation across their company.  Really a coder shoot-out, dev teams showed up, were given a goal or problem statement and had 48 hours in which to solve it.

I am excited to share the outcome of the hackathon event because it really showcased the benefits of adopting DevOps – so much so that it has served to jumpstart it’s adoption across all of our client’s development teams.

In the allotted two weeks leading up to the hackathon, ServiceMesh helped create standardized application platforms using our ServiceMesh Agility Platform.  This gave our client’s dev team access to on-demand, self-service application platforms and environments.  Not only that, but the developers existing continuous integration and source control repositories were integrated into the Agility Platform for a completely streamlined experience for the developers regardless of the programming language they preferred to use.

In addition, we helped establish policies for application release automation that govern how the entire release process is orchestrated across the developers’ toolchain of Eclipse, Jenkins, and enterprise GitHub.  One of the most exciting things for the dev teams was that all of the building blocks created in the Agility Platform are re-usable and will be able to be leveraged going forward unlike in previous hackathons where everything was thrown away afterwards.

The hackathon was a great success with several winning software applications being formally evaluated as production digital offerings.  Not only did the ServiceMesh DevOps Acceleration solution enable the company to eliminate multiple software release bottlenecks by delivering self-service, on-demand resources and development platforms to dev, test and QA, but the entire team was energized.  In fact, one of the executives ServiceMesh spoke with at the event said that seeing the electricity within the teams at the hackathon was invaluable in changing the way the company’s QA and dev teams operate, how they think and prioritize their valuable time.  With these teams now spending their time coding rather than on infrastructure and application platform issues, the company can focus almost exclusively on innovating at the speed of market change.

Working from standardized application platforms has supported the team’s effort to produce results more effectively and efficiently. And as a result, Dev and QA organizations across the company are now spearheading the adoption of the ServiceMesh DevOps solution to provide application release automation for their global project teams.
